Reviewer Yanina Gonldenberg has appraised Robert Swann’s sixth book, ‘Smoke and Tranquility’ and given it a glowing recommendation. Initiall it was her intention to base her appraisal on the first few chapters but she was so intrigued she read on.
“This is a very professionally written, highly competent novel which will appeal to the many readers who are eager to find new perspectives to add to their list of favourites. This is a book of undoubted high quality, it falls into the Crime/Fiction category and will also appeal to readers who enjoy spy and adventure novels. The book is written in a very sophisticated and polished way but also a way that is highly readable. The style is direct and impactful, written with an authoritative tone that perfectly reflects the high suspense action narrative. There is a constant sense of being on the back foot as the narrative which perfectly parallels the situations faced by the main character Simon Hunter, unfolds. This multi-layered plotting allows a great deal of mystery and uncertainty that is an inherent part of the narratives built around betrayal, back stabbing, and plot twists. The narrative is encompassing but does not fall into the trap of prose that is purely expository and the personalities of the characters shows through with passion. As a result, the narrative is thematically rich but has a clear sense of charisma and emotional resonance that will engage the reader even through the more convoluted moments.
